Below is a copy of my last e-mail to M.P. Jack Layton:
Dear Mr. Layton,
Firstly, I would like to say that I am proud to live in your riding. I represent Fair Copyright for Canada, Toronto Danforth District. I volunteered for this position to raise my personal riding's local awareness of the issues being raised by law professors, lawyers, musicians and everyday citizens about Bill C-60.
I personally find this issue important.
Secondly, I consider myself non-partisan and respect the man first, politician second. I respect what you have accomplished and consider you a good man. Judging by your previous campaigning I think it would be safe to say that you are a man who considers himself 'of the people'. This leads me to assume that you will be taking the 'people's side in regards to Bill C-61.
I should say nothing further then I would expect the utmost support and cooperation with Professor Michael Geist1 of the University of Ottawa. I believe Professor Michael Geist represents the 'people's point of view in viewing Bill C-61 as requiring the full attention of the government and its citizens. I believe that you sir, Jack Layton, leader of the New Democrats should make it a point to publicly meet with Professor Geist to show your support for more discussion regarding Bill C-61. Specifically more discussion with Professor Michael Geist.
I am sure that many voters would be appreciative of this intelligent gesture with a tight election around the corner. I only ask; for all of my friends in the riding that you will strongly consider my expectations for your actions.
In my opinion; when members of the legal profession speak about issues for free, in a profession that bills by the hour it is probably worth listening to. Especially if that individual is also responsible for teaching the lawyers of the future and is publically accredited.
Sincerely,
James McKay
1. Dr. Michael Geist is a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he holds the Canada Research Chair of Internet and E-commerce Law. He has obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from Cambridge University in the UK and Columbia Law School in New York, and a Doctorate in Law (J.S.D.) from Columbia Law School.
Please post any comments, or corrections.
I just received MP Jack Layton's reply to my email regarding the Copyfight 2.0:
Dear Mr. McKay,
Thank you for your recent message on your involvement as the Toronto Danforth District representative for Fair Copyright for Canada and for the information about Professor Michael Geist who has been a staunch supporter of the "people's" side on Bill C-61.
The NDP is strongly opposed to this legislation. We are calling on MPs from all parties to listen to their constituents and join the growing chorus of those who are against C-61.
New Democrats are pushing for proper legislation that will ensure artists and creators are compensated for their work while allowing consumers reasonable rights of access. Over the past two years we have urged the Conservative government to consult with stakeholders and develop relevant legislation that would protect artists, innovators and consumers in the 21st century. However, this government has completely ignored all calls to bring forward reasonable copyright legislation and regrettably this bill is worse than originally feared. There is no evidence of any attempt to strike a reasonable balance to protect both either artists or consumers. Instead, C-61 represents a full capitulation to the U.S. corporate lobby that will pave the way for the criminalization of perfectly reasonable behaviour--like format shifting of most legally purchased content.
What can you do? If you haven't already, you can contact the Ministers of Industry and Heritage, the Prime Minister, the leaders of the other opposition parties and your local MP to tell them of your opposition to Bill C-61. Encourage your friends and families to do the same. For contact information, please visit: http://www.parl.gc.ca/common/index.asp?Language=E.

Again, I appreciate the time you have taken to register your views and concerns about this important issue. Feel free to pass along my email to anyone who may be interested. All the best.
Sincerely,
Jack Layton, MP (Toronto-Danforth)
Leader, Canada’s New Democrats
